Big Surprises in Iran Team Trials, Yazdani Shines at 86kg
Saturday, July 8, 2017 - 18:50 By Ali Feiz
The Iran Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Pahlavani World Team Trials were held at Azadi Sport Hall in Tehran in front of more than 9,000 wrestling fans. The star of the second night was 2016 Olympic champion Hassan YAZDANI, who competed at 86kg.
Yazdani won all of his bouts by technical fall except the semifinal match against 2015 world bronze medalist Alireza KARIMI.
After beating Karimi 5-0, Yazadani downed 2013 world silver medalist Ezatollah AKBARI twice by technical fall in the 86kg final series.
“Competing in new weight is a tough job but I try hard to do like I did at 74kg,” said Yazdani. "Team Trials were held in high regard and all rivals were in top form.”
Iran Team Trials were full of surprises as Rio Olympic Games silver medalist Komeil GHASEMI lost in the finals to youngster Yadollah MOHEBBI at 125kg. Mohebbi won both of the finals matches by the score of 5-2.
“I was prepared well and defeating Olympic medalist Ghasemi is a great honor for me.” Mohebbi said.
Former world junior bronze medalist Saeid DADASHPOUR defeated 2016 world bronze medalist Mostafa HOSSEINKHNI in a tightly contested finals at 70kg.
Masoud ESMAEILPOUR, two time world medalist, was another big name who lost at the Iran Team Trials. He was defeated by Behnam EHSANPOOR in the finals at 61kg.
“Hassan RAHIMI (57kg) missed the Iran Team Trials because of injury and we should survey his situation during next month,” said Iran freestyle head coach Mohammad TALAEI. "At 86kg, Yazdani had great performance and the young wrestler Mohebbi was too motivated against Komeil Ghasemi.
“The Technical Committee of the federation decides the final lineup for the Iran freestyle team at the 2017 World Championships.”
In Greco-Roman, there will be many changes in the Iran lineup for the 2017 World Championships as Olympic champions Hamid SORYAN, Omid NOROOZI and Ghasem REZAEI have decided not to wrestle in 2017.
Mehrdad MARDANI will be new name on the Iran team at 59kg, replacing Soryan, a seven-time Olympic and World champion.
2015 World bronze medalist Yousef GHADERIAN was the most famous wrestler which won 80kg title in Iran team trials and all other winners have no experience in World Championships.
“The Iran Greco-Roman team will have many changes for 2017 World Championships and a young team will compete in Paris,” said Iran Greco-Roman head coach Ali ASHKANI. “Also we have some injured wrestlers and we should wait to see their situations.”
