Process and key dates

Bringing a wrestling event to your city begins with a bid. The bid process is a collaboration between the interested city, the relevant National Federation and United World Wrestling. Encouraging a constructive dialogue with interested cities, United World Wrestling is committed to ensure the best fit between a wrestling event and a city.

Cities are allowed to bid for multiple wrestling events in the same or different years.

Timing

  • August, 4 years prior the concerned year: Establishment of the yearly Calendar
  • September, 4 years prior the concerned year: announcement by United World Wrestling of the opening of a the new bid process to award its events for that year;
  • May, 3 years prior the concerned year: deadline for the submission of the application form (including all documents) and payment of bid fee by bidding cities;
  • September (4 years before) - July (3 years before): technical visits to bidding cities by United World Wrestling;
  • Three weeks after the visit: deadline for the submission of additional information/documents
  • September, 3 years prior the concerned year (during the Senior World Championships): final presentations by bidding cities and  announcement of the Host city by United World Wrestling.

All potential host cities will have to pay a bid fee of 500 Swiss Francs upon submission of their application. Such fee covers all administrative costs related to the bidding process. In case of multiple bids, the payment of only one bidding fee will be required.

How is a candidate city selected?

Provided all conditions are met (completed bid form, paid bid fee, inspection visit completed), the candidates’ files are forwarded to the UWW Executive Committee for the selection of the host city for each event in the UWW portfolio.

The following criteria (order not determining) are considered for the selection of each organizer:

  • Quality of the overall project (place, presentation, services, LOC organizational structure,…)
  • Transport (access, internal transport, distances)
  • Accommodation & food (quality of hotels proposed)
  • Sports hall (infrastructure, security, technology, number of seats, accessibility…)
  • Financial guarantees and budget
  • Marketing & sponsoring
  • Risk factors (political, environmental, economic)
  • Legacy (wrestling development opportunities, delivery of cultural activities)
  • Previous experience and rotation between cities
  • Other commitments (environment, side and non-sporting events)

The decision made by the Executive Committee is then validated by the UWW Bureau.

The final decision is announced publicly by UWW.
